Henry

I've been wanting to do a portrait in another medium to spread my wings a little bit and I decided it was going to be in charcoal. I have done charcoal before in school and dabbled a little in it since but it's been a long while since I've attempted a portrait.  What better little guy to practice on then my adorable nephew!! They broke the mold when they made this kid!!

This piece was completed on Strathmore Bristol Board and is appox. 11" x 14".  I primarily used an HB charcoal pencil for this piece because I found that I maintained the most control.  For the hair I used a new eraser that I have found; TOMBO Mono Zero Elastomer Eraser.  This small eraser helped achieve the fine detail in his hair and to pick up the gleam in his eye where the charcoal had smeared onto the paper.  Another tool that was a great help in this piece was a white charcoal pencil.  This tool was great for smoothing out areas of his face where the charcoal was too heavy.
